Binka: To Tell A Story About Silence

Binka: To Tell A Story About Silence

Synopsis

Binka Zhelyazkova (b. 1923), the first female director in Bulgaria, has been recognized for nearly half a century as a major contributor to the art of cinema. Yet at home she was viewed as "the bad girl of Bulgarian cinema" because of her refusal to accept the censorship imposed by the Communist regime. Elka Nikolova, born in Bulgaria but now living in New York, has produced an enlightening documentary that looks at Zhelyazkova's career, including interviews with many of the director's colleagues and clips from her films.
