When the London Film Co-op Cinema ceiling fell in, Martin L met Brinley Mitchell, manager of Knightsbridge cinema, the Minema, at a BFI party. Brinley was tired of doing three week runs of the same art house films screened over and over. So together they cooked up a plan for a weekly Midnight screening of avant-garde and underground cult films every Friday night, presented and run by filmmakers, performance artists and musicians. Martino’s inspirational Flux late night launch at the Minema was in full swing. The opening night featured Jack Smith’s banned celebrated rarely shown epic Flaming Creatures with Co-op doyenne Lis Rhodes’ classic abstract twin screen pulsating optical sound film Light Music along with Kenneth Anger’s Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome to Leos Janácek’s monumental Glagolithic Mass. 30 years on Flux re-surfaces at Close-Up with programmes echoing wholesomely muddled genres, genders, cinematic gazes and gauges!
