Introduced by programme curator Edwin Rostron and followed by filmmaker Q&A

Collision is a new screening series presenting original, daring and sensorially revitalising animation from around the world. This first selection brings together ten new and recent films from some of the most exciting independent animators working today. Featuring hand-drawn, collage, painted and digital animation, these are highly personal artistic visions crafted with great passion and care.

Stone Fruit
Lilli Carré, 2022, 4 min

Stone Fruit was drawn while ruminating on personal and societal concerns around body and germination.

Dull Spots of Greenish Colours
Sasha Svirsky, 2024, 11 min

How is it to be a dull spot of greenish colours? Would you like yourself to be one of the dull spots of greenish colours, or do you prefer to stare at them, to scroll them up and down? What do you hope to find among the greenish spots and dull colours? Is it some great unexpected news that would make you happy or just something that gets you relief? Maybe you want to escape this annoying, itching pleasure of watching them, scrolling them up, while they put you down. Maybe the only thing you want is never to see them again. Would you prefer these spots and colours to be not so dull and not to be greenish at all?

Confetti
Amanda Bonaiuto, 2024, 4 min

Snails, oozing organic matter, a teacup, and a protagonist move through an impulsive train of thought. Confetti is a short hand drawn meditation on the inevitability of change, the body falling apart, and relationships falling apart.

Angels Going to Work
Nora Rodriguez, 2021, 3 min

This animation is built from the voices of my mother and grandmother. I’m interested in stories that take the shape of a spiral. I’m curious about routines that begin to outline larger stories. They are often about the ways loss finds form in the grooves worn into daily life. Like a hole thrown on a cartoon wall, they make physical what is only an absence.

The Doldrums
Chris Childs, 2024, 5 min

A group of partygoers consider what awaits them after death.

MIMT
Ted Wiggin, 2024, 3 min

To give a snake an orange.

Comet
Karolina Glusiec, 2024, 4 min

A small film about something one can long for that came quickly and disappeared quickly. Beautiful illusion of something real that turned violent and destructive, left a big sadness and a hole in the heart. Too much too fast. Easy come, easy go, be careful what you wish for.

Letter #1
Alex Karakonji, 2024, 5 min

Letter #1 is an animated letter to a friend who passed away.

Baigal Nuur - Lake Baikal
Alisi Telengut, 2023, 9 min

The formation of Lake Baikal in Siberia is reimagined with hand-painted animation and found objects, featuring the voice of an Indigenous woman who can still recall some words in her endangered Buryat language (a Mongolian dialect).

In Dreams
Josh Shaffner, 2023, 17 min

Wrapped in bandages, a burn victim is tended to by a futuristic hospice service.
