Nicaragua Part 1: Voyages
Marc Karlin, 1985, 50 min
Between 1978 and 1979 US photographer Susan Meiselas captured the two revolutionary insurrections which led to the overthrow of the Somoza family in Nicaragua, who for 50 years had led the dictatorship of the country. Her photographs were the only means by which many people across the world glimpsed what the Nicaraguan people were experiencing as the revolution developed. Nicaragua Part 1: Voyages innovatively re-presents those images, with a voice-over in the form of a letter written to the independent filmmaker Marc Karlin by Susan Meiselas, examining the inherent contradictions she experienced from being an outsider in the middle of someone else’s political struggle. This screening presents an opportunity to revisit the film in its 40th year and parallel it with contemporary examples of conflict based photo-journalism.
Susan Meiselas will be in discussion with Emily Garthwaite and Holly Aylett after the screening and there will be a chance to purchase the recently released 4th edition of Susan Meiselas: Nicaragua ‘78/79. (15 of April only)
