“Fernández Molero unboxes an ethereal fever dream of a story.” – Susanne Gottlieb
Close-Up is delighted to welcome J.D. Fernández Molero to present is new feature film Punku. In the Peruvian Amazon, Meshia discovers Ivan, a young boy missing for two years, and brings him to the city for urgent eye surgery. As their bond deepens, Ivan confronts his trauma and haunting dreams, while Meshia pursues her ambitions and clings to her illusions. Tinged with autobiographical touches and shot on a mix of 16mm, Super 8, and digital formats, J.D. Fernández Molero unnervingly explores being young in contemporary Peru, with its jumble of late-stage capitalism, traditional culture, and strongly defined gender roles. Here, indigenous teenagers broadcast their lives on TikTok and homeopathic potions are as trusted as modern medicine.
